A 300 GSM t-shirt uses fabric that is 25% heavier per square metre than a 240 GSM t-shirt. The difference is noticeable: 240 GSM is already heavyweight, while 300 GSM feels denser, holds a boxier shape more firmly, blocks more light, and runs warmer. Neither weight is automatically better—the right choice depends on the silhouette and climate you want.

To convert GSM to ounces per square yard, divide by 33.906. That gives about 7.08 oz/yd² for 240 GSM and 8.85 oz/yd² for 300 GSM.

What does the extra 60 GSM actually change?

1. The silhouette becomes more structured

Fabric weight changes how a t-shirt behaves after it leaves the hanger. A 240 GSM jersey can still hold an oversized cut, but it has more movement. At 300 GSM, the fabric resists collapsing toward the body. That makes wide sleeves, a dropped shoulder and a boxy torso read more clearly.

That does not mean GSM creates an oversized fit by itself. Pattern shape still matters. A narrow 300 GSM shirt is still narrow. For the silhouette to work, fabric weight and pattern have to agree.

2. 300 GSM is more opaque

Both weights are substantially more opaque than a standard lightweight tee. The extra density at 300 GSM is especially useful for white shirts and for garments with printing on both sides because the fabric gives the artwork a more substantial base.

3. 300 GSM feels warmer

The tradeoff for structure is heat. A 300 GSM tee carries more material than a 240 GSM tee, so it generally feels warmer and takes longer to dry. If you live in sustained hot, humid weather or want a shirt mainly for summer, 240 GSM—or even lighter—can be the more practical choice.

4. Heavier does not automatically mean higher quality

GSM tells you how much the fabric weighs. It does not tell you whether the cotton is good, whether the knit is consistent, whether the collar is reinforced, or whether the seams are well made. A poorly constructed 300 GSM shirt can be worse than an excellent 240 GSM one.

Use GSM as one specification, not a quality score.

Which should you choose?

Choose 240 GSM if you want a heavyweight feel with more flexibility, easier layering and less heat. It is a strong middle ground for people who like substantial tees without the density of a very heavyweight shirt.

Choose 300 GSM if the priority is a pronounced boxy silhouette, maximum opacity and a garment that feels closer to structured streetwear than a standard basic tee.

Yes in most apparel contexts, although brands do not use one universal cutoff. A 240 GSM jersey is substantially heavier than the roughly 150–190 GSM range common in everyday tees.

Will 300 GSM last longer than 240 GSM?

It can resist distortion better because there is more material, but durability also depends on fiber quality, knitting, seam construction, collar construction and care. GSM alone cannot guarantee lifespan.
